About Me...
I have been part of the health information management (HIM) field since 1999, first as a coder and then a Coding Supervisor and eventually a Director of Health Information Management. I currently work in a Health Information Management Program Office as an HIM Specialist and am an adjunct professor teaching college courses in HIM and medical coding.
My HIM career began when I earned a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential in 1999. I later graduated with honors with an Associate degree in Health Information Technology through Santa Barbara City College in 2004, earned a Baccalaureate degree in Health Information Management through The College of St. Scholastica and subsequently obtained RHIA credentials in 2007, and completed a Healthcare Informatics Certificate and a Master’s degree in Health Information Management through The College of St. Scholastica in 2009. Finally, I graduated with a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership through Lamar University in 2019.
In addition to my education and work experience, I previously served as President of the Alamo Area Health Information Management Association (AAHIMA), a Regional Director of the Texas Health Information Management Association (TxHIMA) and as a member of the American Health Information Management Association’s Council for Excellence in Education (CEE) Faculty Development Workgroup.
Welcome To My Website
Join me as we explore the various medical coding classification systems such as ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT. From the basics and beyond, I will help you develop a solid foundation in medical coding. Experienced coders can obtain certification through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a CCA, CCS, or CCS-P or through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) as a CPC, CIC, COC, coding apprentice, or many of the specialty coding credentials offered.
